FAQs

Getting started

Who can use Riff?

Anyone aged 18 or over who is a UK tax resident and has a UK current account.

When can I start?

Riff isn't live yet. We're opening in waves, starting with people on the waitlist. Join it and we'll tell you as soon as your place opens.

Do I need to switch my bank?

No. You keep your current account. Riff connects to it securely through Open Banking and moves your savings to our partner banks for you.

What do I need to sign up?

Your name, address, date of birth and the current account you want to connect. We check your identity as part of signing up, as every regulated savings provider has to. No documents or selfie needed.

How long does it take to set up?

Less than five minutes. You connect your account, set your rules and approve a payment permission in your own bank's app. Riff then suggests its first move.

How Riff works

What does Riff actually do?

Riff keeps the right amount in your current account for spending. It saves anything above that, moves your savings when a partner bank pays more, and tops your current account back up before you run short. It checks your accounts several times a day, so it can react to a bill coming in or a rate changing without you having to watch.

How does Riff decide where my money goes?

You set the rules: how much to keep to hand, how much to start with, and whether you want quicker access or a higher return. Riff works inside those rules and shows you every move and why it made it.

What kind of savings can Riff use?

You choose. Riff can stick to instant and easy access accounts only, or you can pick an agent that also uses notice or fixed-term accounts for a higher return. Notice and fixed-term money stays put until the notice period or term ends.

Can Riff manage more than one current account?

Yes. Connect more than one current account and Riff manages the balances across them.

Getting your money back

Can I access my money whenever I need it?

Yes. Money in instant and easy access accounts can come back to your current account at any time, usually within seconds by Faster Payments, and Riff tops up your current account if it drops below the level you set. Notice and fixed-term money comes back when the notice period or term ends.

Can I pause or stop Riff?

Yes. You can pause Riff, change your rules or cancel the payment permission in your bank's app at any time. Pausing stops new moves. Your savings stay where they are until you move them.

Is there a minimum or maximum?

No. There's no minimum to start and no maximum.

Is my money safe?

Is my money safe?

It's always your money. It's held for you at our partner banks, separate from Riff's own money.

Is my money protected by the FSCS?

Yes. The Financial Services Compensation Scheme is the UK's deposit protection scheme. If a bank fails, it pays back eligible deposits up to £120,000 per person, per banking group. Each of our partner banks is covered, and for larger balances Riff can spread your savings across several banks to keep more of it protected.

What happens if Riff goes out of business?

Your money stays with the UK banks it's placed with. It's held for you, separately from Riff's own money, so it can't be used to pay Riff's debts.

Is Riff regulated?

Riff has applied to the Financial Conduct Authority for authorisation as a Payment Institution, and it won't move customer money until it's authorised.

Is Open Banking safe? Can Riff see my bank login?

Riff never sees or stores your bank login. You connect through Open Banking, the regulated standard UK banks use, and you approve access in your own bank's app. You can withdraw that access at any time.

What can Riff see, and what does it do with my data?

Riff sees the balances and transactions it needs to keep the right amount in your current account. We don't sell your data.

Fees and rates

How does Riff make money?

Riff is paid a share of the interest your savings earn with our partner banks. The rates we show you are always after our share, so the rate you see is the rate you get. Riff only moves your money when the new rate, after our share, beats what you're earning now. There are no monthly, account or withdrawal fees.

Which banks does Riff work with?

UK banks that are protected by the FSCS. We'll name them before launch, and you'll always see which bank holds your money.

Will Riff always get me the best rate?

Riff gets you the best rate it can find across the banks we work with, within your rules. It doesn't cover every bank in the market, and rates can change.

Practical details

Do I pay tax on the interest?

Interest may be taxable, depending on your income and your Personal Savings Allowance.

Can I have a joint account?

Yes. If your joint account shows through Open Banking, Riff can manage it.

How do I close my Riff account?

Press Close my account in the app, or contact us. Riff moves your money back to your current account as it becomes available. There's no charge to leave.

How do I contact you?
